THE EFFECTS OF MELATONIN, FLUOXETINE AND THEIR COMBINATIONS ON STRESS INDUCED BEHAVIORAL AND COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENTS IN MICE

Objective: Melatonin (Mel) is a hormone with anti-depressant and anti-oxidant features. It well known that melatonin protects brain cells from reactive oxygen species the brain's high consumption lipid content make it particularly vulnerable to oxidative stress caused by prolonged stress. This study aims investigate effects of melatonin, fluoxetine their combinations on emotional memory, depression, anxiety-like behavioral changes induced immobilization (Imb) Material Method: 48 male Balb/c mice were divided into eight groups: Cnt (control), Imb, Imb+Mlt, Imb+Flx (fluoxetine), Imb+Mlt+Flx, Mlt, Flx Mlt+Flx. For seven days in row, underwent daily for 6 hours. Mice treated Mlt (10 mg/kg) (20 mg/kg). All animals subjected tests; forced swimming test (FST), open field (OFT), elevated plus maze (EPM), passive avoidance (PAT) hot plate (HP) test. After all tests, tissues obtained malondialdehyde level analysis. Result Discussion: OFT data showed time spent central zone number entrances area significantly lower Imb group compared group, these higher Imb+Flx, Imb+Mlt+Flx groups group. Also, according FST, immobile was Besides, demonstrated memory index statistically increasing returned normal Imb+Mlt PAT. And also, peroxidation level, which increased decreased groups. As result, observed has anti-depressant, anxiolytic, antioxidant normalized memory. exert similar present study.
